Technical Document

Brief Overview

Ferrous Sulphate Heptahydrate (FeSO₄·7H₂O) is a blue-green crystalline compound widely used in various industries, including water treatment, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. It serves as an iron supplement in animal feed and fertilizers, a coagulant in wastewater treatment, and a precursor in pigment production.

Manufacturing Process

Ferrous Sulphate Heptahydrate is primarily produced as a byproduct of steel pickling, where iron reacts with sulfuric acid. The resulting ferrous sulfate solution is then crystallized and dried to obtain the heptahydrate form. Alternatively, it can be synthesized by reacting iron ore with sulfuric acid under controlled conditions.

Wastewater Treatment
Act as a coagulant in waste water treatment as a replacement of aluminum sulphate.

Cement
Used to reduce chromium VI compounds to chromium III.

Iron oxide
It is used to produce iron oxides, which are used as pigments in colored concrete, paints, and coatings.

Textiles
FSH employed in textile manufacture during the dyeing process of wool to facilitate the bonding of color to the
fabric cells.

Iron supplements
Used in pharmaceuticals to prepare iron supplements for patients suffering from anemia.

Livestock feed additive
Usually mixed in small quantities with livestock feed to stimulate the growth of cattle and poultry.

Other applications
It is used in concrete and wood coloring, cosmetics as an astringent, fertilizers as moss killer and lawn
conditioner, gold refining, coolant water of turbines to make surface of brass corrosion resistant, etc.
